"Mail" is a word in LAW AND LEGAL, ENGLISH
As applied to the post-office, this term means the carriage of letters, whether applled to the hag lnto whlch they are put, the coach or vehicle by means of which they are transported, or any other means em-ployed for their carriage and delivery by publlc authority, wynen v. Schappert, 6 Daly (N. Y.) 560. It may also denote the letters or other matter so carried

Hence generally, armor, or any defensive covering.

carried.

plates of reptiles, shell of a lobster, etc.
The bag or bags with the letters, papers, papers, or other
matter contained therein, conveyed under public authority from one post
office to another; the whole system of appliances used by government in
the conveyance and delivery of mail matter.
