"Upset" is a word in ENGLISH
To thicken and shorten, as a heated piece of iron, by
hammering on the end.
Set up; fixed; determined; -- used chiefly or only in the
phrase upset price; that is, the price fixed upon as the minimum for
property offered in a public sale, or, in an auction, the price at
which property is set up or started by the auctioneer, and the lowest
price at which it will be sold.
To overturn, overthrow, or overset; as, to upset a
carriage; to upset an argument.
To disturb the self-possession of; to disorder the nerves
of; to make ill; as, the fright upset her.
To set up; to put upright.
To become upset.
The act of upsetting, or the state of being upset; an
overturn; as, the wagon had an upset.
To shorten (a tire) in the process of resetting,
originally by cutting it and hammering on the ends.
The rain spun in the yellow arc lights over the café parking lot. It was empty inside, except for a fat Negro woman whom I could see through the service window in the kitchen, and a pretty, redheaded waitress in her early twenties, dressed in a pink uniform with her hair tied up on her freckled neck. She was obviously tired, but she was polite and smiled at me when she took my order, and I felt a sense of guilt, almost shame, at my susceptibility and easy fondness for a young woman's smile. Because if you're forty-nine and unmarried or a widower or if you've simply chosen to live alone, you're easily flattered by a young woman's seeming attention to you, and you forget that it is often simply a deference to your age.
