A member of the Teutonic branch of the Indo-European, or
Aryan, family.
One of an ancient German tribe; later, a name applied to
any member of the Germanic race in Europe; now used to designate a
German, Dutchman, Scandinavian, etc., in distinction from a Celt or one
of a Latin race.
The values we rightly associate with the modern age - the "liberty, equality, and fraternity" of the French revolution - are all endangered today not by the dead hand of tradition but by modernity itself, and they can be salvaged only by moving beyond it.
