"Sentence" is a word in LAW AND LEGAL, ENGLISH
The judgment formally pro-nounced by the court or judge upon the de-fendant after his conviction in a criminal prosecution, awarding tbe punishment to be inflicted. The word is properly confined to this meaning. In civil cases, the terms “Judg-ment,” “decision,” “award," “finding," etc., are used. See Featheretone v. People, 194 111. 325, 62 N. E. 684; State v. thought, and in writing is marked at the close by a period, or full

In civil and admiralty law, the judgment of a court
pronounced in a cause; in criminal and ecclesiastical courts, a
judgment passed on a criminal by a court or judge; condemnation
pronounced by a judgical tribunal; doom. In common law, the term is
exclusively used to denote the judgment in criminal cases.
