"Hydractinian" is a word in ENGLISH
Any species or marine hydroids, of the genus
Hydractinia and allied genera. These hydroids form, by their
rootstalks, a firm, chitinous coating on shells and stones, and esp. on
spiral shells occupied by hermit crabs. See Illust. of Athecata.
The idea was that you could grow a system like the Internet one network at a time and then interconnect them. In some sense, the most important thing was the invention of the architecture protocols that enabled the Internet.
